Article by Allan Codling
Hey, Allan Codling here, ready for some dog training advice? First off I want to congratulate you if you’re a dog lover and you are the one training your dog. If you are not the one training your pup I suggest you should be. It’s more rewarding, more fun, very effective and loads cheaper than schools and trainers. You know people think that dog training is a one way street and that it is just the dog learning. In all actuality, you the owner are also learning so much about your dog’s wants, needs, likes, dislikes, strengths weaknesses and more!
Dog Training Advice- Do Not Make This Mistake
Here is what happens: John Smith gets his new doberman and names her Candy. He wants to train her so he looks for training methods. He follows a guide that states they have the one training method that will train any breed of dog. This is good right? WRONG! Huge mistake. Not good dog training advice. There is a lot of misinformation being spread about a one magic bullet training method that works for all dogs. There are over 400 breeds of dogs. There is no way that all these different personalities of dogs can respond to some one universal method. This just does not exist. Well, Sort of. Let me clarify…..
When you first start to train your dog, you should start with basic training. Now basic training methods are fundamental and can be applied to all dogs. These methods are just the general foundation that you build when training your dog and these methods apply to any and every dog. An example would be the positive reinforcement method. This is a fundamental method where you train your dog by praising and rewarding him or her with treats when they complete a task or display good behavior!
Unfortunately these methods are just to general to completely train you pooch. They are not enough to address dog behavior problems, obedience, how a dog interacts with adults, children, other dogs and other animals. You need more advance training methods that are designed to train that particular breed of dog to get your dog completely trained. For instance, Chow Chows are known as one of the most aggressive of all dogs. Labradors however are very docile. So using Labrador training methods to cure Chow Chow aggression will not work. You follow?
I really hope you have absorbed what I have written here because it goes a long way. Do not make the same mistake that so many dog owners have made time and time again myself included :o). Now follow this dog training advice I gave you. Take care and say hi to the pooch for me!
